The India Today Group has appointed Nilanjan Das as its Chief AI Officer (CAIO), marking a significant step in the organisation’s journey towards AI-driven transformation. In his new role, Das will lead the newly formed India Today AI Lab, tasked with building AI-first capabilities to reshape how the Group produces, distributes and monetises content.

Das brings extensive media experience and a proven track record of pioneering AI-led initiatives within the organisation. He has been instrumental in integrating artificial intelligence into India Today’s editorial and creative workflows—introducing innovations such as the world’s first synthetic AI news anchor, AI-generated pop stars, AI-assisted television films, and AI-powered magazine covers.

Reporting directly to Kalli Purie, Vice Chairperson and Executive Editor-in-Chief, Das will collaborate with editorial, technology, and business teams to accelerate AI adoption across the Group’s print, digital, and television verticals. His vision is to harness AI not as a replacement, but as a co-creative force that enhances human editorial judgment and creativity.

Before this role, Das served as Group Creative Editor at India Today, where he helped redefine the visual and technological language of Indian journalism. His career also includes senior editorial positions at Fortune India, Open Magazine, and Time Magazine, where he led award-winning visual transformations across Asia and Europe.

He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Goenka College of Commerce & Business Administration and further honed his expertise through the Executive Program on Artificial Intelligence: Implications for Business Strategy at the MIT Sloan School of Management.

Das’s work has earned recognition from leading international platforms, including the Society of Publication Designers (SPD), IFRA, and SOPA, highlighting his unique ability to combine editorial depth with design precision. With a rare blend of creative vision, global experience, and AI strategy, Nilanjan Das is poised to lead the India Today Group into a new era of intelligent, technology-enhanced storytelling.
