Starbucks has announced the appointment of Anand Varadarajan as Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer (CTO), strengthening its global technology leadership as the company accelerates its digital and operational transformation.
Varadarajan will assume the role on January 19 and will join Starbucks’ Executive Leadership Team, reporting directly to Chief Executive Officer Brian Niccol. He succeeds Deb Hall Lefevre, who stepped down from the role in September, following which Ningyu Chen served as Interim CTO.
The appointment comes at a time when Starbucks is undertaking a comprehensive technology modernisation initiative aimed at enhancing in-store operations, improving labour efficiency, and strengthening digital capabilities across its global footprint.
Varadarajan brings nearly two decades of experience from Amazon, where he spent close to 19 years in various leadership roles. Most recently, he led technology and supply chain systems for Amazon’s Worldwide Grocery Stores business, overseeing large-scale, customer-centric platforms across complex retail and logistics environments. Earlier in his career, he worked as a software engineer at Oracle and with multiple technology startups.
Commenting on the appointment, Starbucks highlighted Varadarajan’s deep expertise in building secure, scalable, and reliable technology platforms that support operational excellence while keeping customer experience at the core. CEO Brian Niccol noted that Varadarajan will play a critical role in advancing Starbucks’ global digital strategy and leading the Starbucks Technology organisation.
Varadarajan is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology and holds a master’s degree in civil engineering from Purdue University, along with a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Washington.
Outside of his professional commitments, Varadarajan is an avid runner working toward completing all seven World Marathon Majors and is a self-professed coffee enthusiast who begins his day with a tall latte or freshly brewed coffee.
